Fuat Başar

Born on March 7, 1953, in Erzurum, Fuat Başar studied at Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine. In 1977, driven by his interest and passion for the art of ebru (marbling), he wrote a letter to Mustafa Düzgünman and began learning the craft. Around the same time, he also corresponded with Hamit Aytaç to take calligraphy lessons from the master. In 1980, he chose to prioritize his love for art over his medical studies and moved to Istanbul to study under his teachers. On September 10, 1980, he received his certification (icazet) in calligraphy from Hamit Aytaç. Despite being certified, he remained closely connected to his teacher until his passing.

On September 10, 1989, he received three ebru certifications (icazetnames), including one in Ottoman Turkish, from the great ebru master Mustafa Düzgünman. Following the passing of his teachers, Fuat Başar established his own workshop and has been working professionally as a calligrapher and ebru artist ever since.

Today, his certified students teach ebru and calligraphy across Turkey. As an artist who has trained many renowned calligraphers and ebru masters worldwide, he has participated in over 350 solo and group exhibitions. He has also been involved in numerous international art events, promoting the art of ebru in countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and others.

Fuat Başar has conducted studies on the physical and chemical aspects of ebru at Yıldız Technical University. He has authored a book and numerous articles on ebru. Additionally, he has appeared on various radio and television programs, contributed to local and international documentaries, and written for various magazines and newspapers. Fuat Başar has also contributed to the preparation of numerous books.
