Born in Çorum-Bayat (Yoncalı Village), Prof. Mehmet Memiş graduated from Selçuk University Faculty of Theology in 1984 and started his art education by taking calligraphy lessons from Calligrapher Hüseyin Öksüz during his faculty years. In 1985, he was appointed as a teacher in Istanbul, continued his studies with Calligrapher Hasan Çelebi and learnt Taliq and Diwani scripts from Prof. Ali Alparslan. In the same year, he received ijazah (authorisation) in Thuluth-Naskh from Hüseyin Öksüz.
He attended Turkish Decorative Arts courses at Topkapı Palace between 1985-1988 and gave Islamic Calligraphy classes at the same institution between 1990-1993. He completed his master's degree in Traditional Turkish Arts at Marmara University and his doctorate in History of Turkish-Islamic Arts in 1998. He started his academic career as a lecturer at Harran University and has continued as a faculty member in the Department of History of Turkish-Islamic Arts at Sakarya University since 1999.
Having opened more than 30 solo exhibitions and participated in international exhibitions, Prof. Memiş has organised events in cities such as Frankfurt, Shanghai and Brussels to promote Turkish art. The artist, who used the pseudonym "Râmî", produced works especially in the thuluth, naskh and jali thuluth branches and won 10 awards.
