Obaida Muhammed Salih el-Banki

The artist was born in 1964 in Deir ez-Zor, Syria. He graduated from the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Aleppo. In 1999, he received an ijazah (authorisation) from Hasan Çelebi and gained mastery in the art of calligraphy.

The artist, who won many international awards, received the first prize in the International Mushaf Writing Competition held in Doha. He had the honour of writing the Holy Quran twice and wrote Mushaf for the State of Qatar and Kuwait. He was awarded by the State of Qatar and received the Order of Merit from Sheikh Temim bin Hamad al-Sani. He was also awarded with appreciation by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad al-Qasimi, the Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah.

The artist came second in the Hamid al-Amidi International Calligraphy Competition held in Istanbul in 1989 in the naskh script category. In 1994, he won three honour awards at the Ibn-i Buvab International Competition, also held in Istanbul. In 1997, he received the second prize in the Hamdullah al-Amasi International Competition in thuluth script and two honour awards in naskh and reyhani scripts. In 2000, he received the second prize in the Sid Ibrahim International Competition in naskh script and an honour award in thuluth script.

The artist's jury memberships are also quite extensive. He served as a jury member for 7 terms in IRCICA International Calligraphy Competitions, 9 terms in Dubai International Quran Writing Competition and 5 terms in Burda Competition in United Arab Emirates. He also served as the chairman of the jury in Sharjah International Calligraphy Meeting, Istanbul International Quran Writing Competition and First International Arab Calligraphy Meeting in Qatar. He served as a jury member in the Abdulhamid al-Katib Competition in Syria for three terms, in the Shahr-i Hayır International Competition in Kuwait and in the Oman-Maskat Calligraphy Competition.
