Yasemin Sönmez

She was born in Ankara. She completed her bachelor's and master's degree in Chemical Engineering in 2014. During her undergraduate education, she was interested in photography and music, and with the influence of these, she became interested in calligraphy. In 2011, she decided to continue her professional life with this art by starting thuluth-naskh calligraphy education.  In 2018, she completed her master's degree at Konya Selçuk Faculty of Fine Arts and focused on calligraphy, painting and book restoration.  Since 2018, she has been pursuing her studies in Istanbul as a student of Davut Bektaş and Ali Toy in addition to thuluth, naskh, jali thuluth, maqıli, ruqah and diwani scripts. In 2023, she started her doctoral studies at Istanbul University, Department of Islamic Arts.  Although she is interested in various academic subjects, she is especially interested in the history of calligraphy, Hagia Sophia Complex and manuscripts. She continues to work in the field of Islamic Calligraphy with both classical and modern forms of expression. The foreign languages spoken by the artist, who carries out her works in Ankara and Istanbul, are English and Arabic.
