Born on 11 November 1971 in Mosul, Mahfuz Zünnûn graduated from Mosul University Faculty of Law in 1994. In 2000, he received an ijazah (authorisation) in calligraphy from Yusuf Zünnû and in 2010 from Ahmed Abdulrahman Erbilli. Between 2005-2008, he worked as a faculty member in the field of calligraphy at Mosul University School of Fine Arts.
In 2019, he completed his master's degree at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University with his thesis titled "The birth and development of the Muhaqqaq calligraphic script" ("Muhakkak hattının doğuşu ve gelişmesi"). The artist, who specialises in script types such as Thuluth, naskh, Muhaqqaq, Reyhani and Jali-Diwani, participated in many national and international exhibitions, competitions and festivals and won awards. These include first prizes in the 2010 Albaraka Türk and 2016 al-Burde international competitions.
Since 2009, the artist has written eight Qur'anic volumes, served as a jury member in international events, and participated in many mosques and architectural structures with his writings. In 2014, he settled in Bursa and obtained Turkish citizenship in 2018. He still continues to give calligraphy lessons in his workshop in Bursa.
